As a teacher, I don’t agree we aren’t aware that metaphor is in everyday language. Feels a bit disrespectful to a profession that gives more than it ever gets. Perhaps many teachers don’t highlight how common metaphor is but we are educated to know they are everywhere. Please consider editing for clarity and truth.

Hi Charlie, I do hope that you’re right and things have changed since I was at school. My dad was in teacher training in those days and was campaigning to change people’s understanding of the role of metaphor: at the time it seemed he was having very limited success.

In saying, “What our teachers didn’t realise…” my intention was to draw attention to how things *were* (and to acknowledge the experience of people like me), not to comment on how things *are*.
